6 December - Campbelltown City Council awarded for school recycling program

Campbelltown City Council has received top honors at the inaugural MobileMuster Local Government Awards.
Australian of the Year and leading environmentalist, Professor Tim Flannery, presented the awards at the National General Assembly of the Australian Local Government Association in Darwin last week.
Campbelltown City Council was awarded the Working With Schools Award for initiating and running the first ever MobileMuster School’s Mobile Phone Recycling Competition.
The competition was held as part of Campbelltown City Council’s MobileMuster mobile phone round up. The program is part of a national recycling initiative, developed and funded by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association in an effort to prevent mobile phones ending up in landfill.
Council’s program offered $1000 in funding for the top primary school and the top high school that collected the highest number of mobile phones, batteries and accessories for recycling. Winning schools, Mary Brooksbank School and Hurlstone Agricultural High School, put their funding towards environmental initiatives within their schools.
The competition was the first of its kind. As a result of its success, Councils across Victoria will soon adopt the schools competition concept and MobileMuster plans to extend the concept nationally in 2008.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Aaron Rule, said the award was a great achievement by Council and he hoped other local governments would get involved in the initiative and continue to develop innovative ways to encourage the community to recycle.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to be proactive in recycling and to reuse items that would otherwise become landfill. This award is a significant achievement for Council and shows just how much can be accomplished when the community is given the opportunity to get involved in such worthwhile programs,” Cr Rule said.
